Custom Fantasy Leagues vs Fantasy Premier League
Fantasy Premier League is the official Premier League game: free, enormously popular, and built around a single scoring system that every player in the world shares. Mini-leagues let you compete privately with friends, but they are a leaderboard filtered from that one game — the rules inside are identical for everyone.
What Fantasy Premier League does better
Putting this first because a comparison that finds no merit in the alternative is an advert.
- It is free, permanently, with no credits or purchases of any kind.
- The player base is vast, which makes ownership percentages, price changes and template teams a genuine and enjoyable metagame. Nothing we do can replicate that scale.
- It is the official game, using official data, with the entire fantasy football media ecosystem built around it.
- It has chips — wildcards and the rest — which we do not have yet.
Where they differ
| Fantasy Premier League | Custom Fantasy Leagues | |
|---|---|---|
| Scoring | One scoring system, identical for every player worldwide. A mini-league cannot change it. | You design the scoring. Choose which stats score, how they pay, whether they pay differently by position, and whether they pay at all unless a condition holds. |
| Player prices | One global price list, shared by everyone and moved by transfer market activity. | Prices are computed from your rules by running last season through them, so the players your league values are the ones that cost. |
| Player pool | Every Premier League player is eligible, with a maximum of three per club. | You set the per-club cap, override it club by club, and exclude individual players. |
| What a private league changes | Who you are ranked against. | The game itself — scoring, prices, budget, transfers and eligibility. |
| Cost | Free. | Free to join and play. Creating a league costs one credit per gameweek, once, and new accounts get free credits. |
Choose Fantasy Premier League if…
- You want the biggest possible competition and the shared cultural experience around it.
- You want chips and the transfer-price metagame.
- You do not actually want to change the rules — plenty of people do not, and that is a perfectly good answer.
Choose Custom Fantasy Leagues if…
- Your league has an argument about scoring that has never gone anywhere.
- You think defensive work is undervalued, or that goalkeepers are boring, or that penalties should not count.
- You want a shorter league — ten gameweeks rather than thirty-eight.
- You want prices that reflect your rules rather than someone else’s.
